Bearing loss is one of three sets of images which together are called
Bearing loss, being lost and losing. They were conceived of as illustrations of complex emotions. The pictures and words are meant to be evocative of a certain emotion which is difficult to grasp. The idea to compile these images came from some involvement in the diagnosis of a child with Aspergers syndrome. During the lengthy process of diagnosis I came across some images of emotions: facial expressions. Underneath each face was the emotion it was meant to convey. Things like happy or sad. You can find an example
here. I developed the series
Bearing loss, being lost and losing as a reaction to these images.
The pictures were taken mostly with a 35mm camera in and around my neighbourhood. The memorials mark traffic accident spots where there has been a fatality - usually a cyclist or a child. The words are meant to be in the voice of the victim and to be spoken after death. The unusual punctuation is meant to signify this. The emotion being conveyed is regret. Regret at not being valued until we are gone.
